Biomass in New Zealand

In New Zealand, municipal solid waste and forestry and wood processing materials were both used to provide electricity, biogas and direct combustion energy in 2008. Municipal solid waste produced 2 870 TJ of biogas and 726 TJ of electricity, at an electricity generating capacity of 37 800 kW, and 280 TJ was produced from direct combustion.

Forestry and wood processing materials produced biogas (40 420 TJ), electricity (4 420 TJ with a capacity of 68 400 kW) and direct combustion energy (36 000 TJ), with a total energy production of 40 420 TJ.
