Lecture: World Energy Council (WEC) Energy Studies - Messages for South Africa

The World Energy Council (WEC) recently published a number of study reports at the WEC Congress in Daegu, South Korea. These studies have important findings and conclusions which are relevant to South Africa. The presentation will provide background to two of the studies – “Energy Trilemma” and “Energy Issues”, – present some of the key outcomes and make some suggestions regarding the relevance to South Africa. There will be plenty of opportunity for the delegates to engage on the topics presented

Key Speakers

Key speaker: Brian Statham, Chairman, SANEA. Brian is the Executive Chairman of the South African National Energy Association (SANEA). Brian is also an Officer of the World Energy Council (WEC), Chairman of its Studies Committee and a member of its Communications, Finance, Programme and Remuneration Committees. Brian has some 36 years of experience in energy and has been involved in construction [coal, hydro and nuclear], operations, research, production planning, investment planning, project development [coal, hydro, LNG, natural gas, nuclear] and strategic planning, predominantly in the area of power generation. He chaired the 2007 WEC Global Study on “Energy Policy Scenarios to 2050″ and has served on a number of governmental task forces and committees dealing with energy matters. Brian is also Chair of the Energy Access Partnership, which is a company formed by several companies from Canada, South Africa and Sweden, and he is Deputy-Chair of the South African Coal Roadmap. Passionate about enhancing the dialogue on energy matters, especially in the African context, Brian is Chair of Africa Energy Indaba.
