Global energy leader, economist, teacher and researcher Marcel Boiteux of France was named winner of the 2001 Global Energy Award by the World Energy Council (WEC). The award was presented to Mr. Boiteux by WEC Chair Jim Adam on 25 October, during the 18th World Energy Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Mr. Boiteux is internationally renowned in the global energy sector, primarily for his work in economic studies for the formulation of energy planning theories. His work resulted in significant improvements in tariff concepts, energy system expansion and nuclear power generation. He received a degree in Economics from France's Political Studies Institute in 1947, then joined the staff of the National Scientific Research Centre.

In 1949, he took a position with the French power board, Electricité de France and was later appointed General Manager (1967-1978) and Chairman of the Board (1978-1987). Boiteux has also been a professor at Ecole Supérieure d'Electricité and Ecole Nationale des Ponts and Chaussées, Chairman of the Advisory Committee for Scientific and Technical Research, a member of the Atomic Energy Committee, Vice Chair of the International Union of Producers and Distributors of Electrical Energy (UNIPEDE), a member of the Advisory Council of Banque de France, and Chair of the European Centre of Public Enterprises, the High Scientific Studies Institute, and the Institut Pasteur. He was recognised for his many contributions to research and teaching in 1994, when he was awarded the title of "Epée d'Académicien" by the French government. He holds numerous memberships in professional, economic and research organisations, and received an Honorary Doctorate from Yale University (US) in 1982. Mr. Boiteux is currently Chair of the Foundation of Electricité de France.

A long-time active member of the World Energy Council (WEC), Mr. Boiteux has served in many capacities within that organisation. His most significant contributions came during his years as Chair of its Conservation Commission (later the Studies Committee) and as President of the Organising Committee for the 1986 World Energy Congress in Cannes. Mr. Boiteux was named an Honorary President of WEC in 1986. Created by the World Energy Council in 1998, the Global Energy Award is presented at each triennial World Energy Congress to an eminent international personality who has contributed substantially to the understanding of the global energy sector, who has supported the World Energy Council in its work and who has made significant contributions to his company or organisation, his government, his community and his country. Nominations for the award are made by WEC Member Committees, and the winner is selected by the WEC Officers Council. For further information, contact:
