Survey of Energy Resources 2007

Geothermal Country Notes

Croatia
The considerable Croatian geothermal resource is located in the southeastern and northeastern areas of the country and although usage is increasing, it is still at a very low level.

There are 28 reservoirs in the country, with a total potential of about 1 000 MWt. Of these, 18 (representing some 114 MWt) have been exploited for direct-use purposes (balneology, recreation and space heating).

As the acceptance and adoption of renewable energies become a reality, it is foreseen that there will be an increased use of geothermal energy within Croatia. It is planned to install a 4.4 MWe power plant in Velika Ciglena by 2010, with an expansion to 13.1 MWe by 2015.
