Geothermal resources are prevalent throughout the area of the South Caucasus and are utilised intensively in Georgia. However, development has been slow in recent years despite the fact that foreign aid has been available to assist with the country's difficult energy supply situation.

In 2002 it was estimated that total availability of geothermal water exceeded 100 000 m³/day. To date, the main use has been for district heating schemes, the most important of which is in the Tbilisi area (10.6 MWt).
The first stage (3 MWt) of a plan for the Zugdidi-Tsaishi field was due for completion in 2005. Ultimately it is hoped that a district heating scheme of 100 MWt will be completed in 2008-2009.

A project in the resort of Tskhaltubo foresees using a heat capacity of 40 MWt for balneological purposes (by means of heat pumps).
