Kazakhstan

The only NPP to have operated in Kazakhstan was BN-350, a 70 MWe fast breeder reactor located at Aktau on the Mangyshlak Peninsula in the Caspian Sea. It came into service in 1973 and was eventually shut down in June 1999. Reflecting its small generating capacity, and its additional use for desalination and the provision of process heat, BN-350's contribution to the republic's electricity supply was minimal: over its lifetime of operation, its average annual output was only about 70 GWh.

In July 2006, it was reported that Russia and Kazakhstan had agreed to establish a joint venture for the design of next-generation small and medium power reactors and for the construction of a small NPP in Kazakhstan.
