Oil Shale Country Notes

Although oil shale deposits are known to exist over a wide area in middle and western Anatolia, they have received relatively little investigation. The total reserve of oil shale has been estimated to be in the region of 3-5 billion tonnes, with proved reserves put at 2.2 billion tonnes. Of this latter figure, the geologic reserve is put at 0.5 billion tonnes and the possible reserve at 1.7 billion tonnes. Four major deposits: Himmeto?lu, Seyitömer, Hatilda? and Beypazari have been studied in detail and found to vary quite widely in quality. Study is required of each individual reserve to establish the suitability of use. However, it is already considered that in general Turkish oil shale would be most profitably used to supplement coal or lignite as a power station fuel, rather than for the recovery of shale oil.
