Survey of Energy Resources 2007

Peat Country Notes

Italy

There are significant resources of peat (circa 1 200 km2) in Italy, mostly in Piedmont, Lombardia and Venezia in the north of the country. Fuel Peat: World Resources and Utilisation gives the estimated reserves as 2.5 billion tonnes: the proportion of this amount that might be suitable for fuel use is indeterminate.

Although peat has been used for fuel during the past, notably in the context of wartime shortages of other sources of energy, no present-day usage has been reported.
