Press Release 11 November 2007

ADDRESS FROM THE ITALIAN PRESIDENT
OF THE REPUBLIC TO THE CONGRESS

Rome, 11 November 2007 - The president of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano today sent a message to launch the opening of the 20th World Energy Congress taking place in Rome.Following is the letter  the President sent from the Quirinale:

"THE 20th World Energy Congress brings together the worlds of business, science and research and provides a chance to exchange ideas and knowledge about one of the most sensitive and complex issues of our time which has serious economic, environmental and social implications.

In a world which will see a significant increase in energy needs and a progressive reduction in the supplies traditionally available, discovering sources of alternative and renewable energy has become a serious priority if we are to ensure the planet has a fair chance of progress.

The role of research is therefore essential if we are to meet the challenge of sustainable energy use and to safeguard the global environment and eco-system.

The work of all the participants will provide a significant contribution to solving these serious social issues. I am speaking to you, kind president, to the organizers and to all of the participants, kind regards and good luck with your work".

The president will meet a delegation from the World Energy Council on Wednesday. The delegation will include André Caillé, WEC chairman and Chicco Testa, chairman of the WEC organizing committee.
