Here we begin a series of case studies that demonstrate how power plant performance data collection, data sharing and data analysis has helped the world’s electric generating plant improve their reliability, availability, efficiency, cost, safety and environmental performance. The strong response from generation plant personnel around the world to our first series of case studies has prompted this new series which we hope will include first hand experiences from many of our readers.
 
Our first new study comes from ABB and describes how generator circuit breakers can substantially reduce the risk of certain High Impact – Low Probability (HILP) events. By coincidence HILP reduction was the topic for the first case study we published in February, 2002. We encourage any of our readers who might have had similar experiences to share them with others around the world by submitting them to the WEC for publication on our website.
 
This new series of case studies is especially timely since WEC is undertaking a new initiative to substantially enhance its data collection system by providing a simple, yet comprehensive method for all generators worldwide to input their plant’s performance indicators directly into the WEC database. We expect to take advantage of the communication linkages established with these case studies to keep everyone fully informed as this effort develops.
