SANEA, in collaboration with A.T. Kearney, will be hosting an industry-wide effort to draft an energy vision and roadmap to support the implementation of the National Development Plan (NDP). This will take the form of a high-level development path for twenty five years covering the use of petroleum products, coal and gas, as well as electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. In addition we intend to identify the areas where industry and government can, and need to, work together to resolve bottlenecks and facilitate productive energy development.

The Energy chapter of the NDP has set a high level agenda, but it has left the development of the detail of implementation to government departments and industry to take forward. There are also a number of open questions about how best to develop the industry to support SA’s growth objectives and achieve the required job creation. For instance, what should the balance of responsibility be between government and the private sector for investment, and how can private investment be enabled to meet public goals? It is also imperative that we effectively engage on the social and economic development requirements outlined in the NDP.

This interactive event has as its objectives the following:

  • To create a forum aimed towards creating a common view of the benefits of, and required response to, the NDP from the broad energy-related business sector.
  • To create deeper understanding of the objectives of the NDP, its contents, and the imperative next steps towards effective implementation.
  • To create trust and collaboration between the NPC and the energy-related business sector, and to extend this collaboration across other spheres of government.

The event will kick-off with a keynote address delivered by the Chairman of the NPC on the NDP in general, and the Energy Chapter in particular. Following this will be more detail on the contents and intentions of the NDP by Professor Anton Eberhard, Commissioner on the NPC. Mr Cas Coovadia will provide a response from BUSA, while other speakers from energy-related industry associations will provide a platform for engagement. The morning session will be closed out by a panel discussion of the speakers mentioned above.

The afternoon will be devoted to four breakaway sessions that will seek to define the intended roadmap in more detail in each of the follow areas:

  • Oil
  • Gas
  • Electricity
  • Coal

A report on the insights gained will be distributed after the event, with the intention for this work to form the basis of effective collaboration and further discussions between business and government.

Now, more than ever, South Africa needs well-informed, proactive and inspirational leadership on energy matters. Building on the success of previous Action for Energy events, this one seeks to stimulate dialogue, exchange ideas and catalyse action on critical issues relating to the NDP.
