Empowering Energy: Scaling up rural energy access through innovation

Wednesday, 13 September 2017, 10:00-13:00

This workshop is part of the Dialogues for the Future of Energy  week, 11-13 September 2017. It will address how new actors and existing interested parties can cooperate to transform energy into a tool for prosperity. Participants will explore the challenges and opportunities to bring energy to the rural areas and address the role of new actors and business models to create synergies among communities.

The lack of access to energy in rural areas is strongly interconnected with a negative impact on human health, education, and economic well-being. In the context of energy reforms, renewable energy integration plays a key role and numerous projects are initiated all over the continent.

While such developments can be an effective way to deliver energy access to remote communities and meet climate change goals, the introduction of projects in those areas can present particular challenges and opportunities.

During this session participants will examine the challenges of bringing energy to rural areas and discuss how disruptive business models can successfully secure benefit sharing across communities. It will aim to identify new players who have the potential to make this leap happen and explore what stakeholders can do and how they can cooperate for energy to become a tool for prosperity in rural areas.
