World Energy Council to launch cyber resilience report at German Energy Day

Posted on 21 September 2016

cyber-attack-2The World Energy Council will launch a new report on managing and financing cyber during an event entitled ‘Trends and Innovations in the digital Energy world’ risks at Energy Day Germany on 29 September 2016, organised by the Council’s German member committee.

The report ‘Road to resilience: managing cyber risks’ investigates how cyber risks can best be managed, taking into account the changing nature of the energy industry and energy infrastructure. Drawing on insights from a network of energy industry experts, the report assesses the ways in which vulnerabilities in current and new energy infrastructures are changing. The report also recommends several actions that energy decision makers and stakeholders can take – individually and collaboratively – to improve the sector’s response to rising cyber threats.

It is the third in a series of reports that addresses the need for more investment and system change to increase resilience towards emerging risks, besides cyber threats, also including extreme weather and the energy-water-food nexus. It is published by the Council in collaboration with project partners Swiss Re Corporate Solutions and Marsh & McLennan companies.

Following the opening by Günther Oettinger, EU Commissioner Digital Economy and Society, Willy Stoessel, Head Cyber, Technology & Construction, Swiss Re Corporate Solutions will officially launch the report during his keynote speech highlighting  key findings.

Dr Carsten Rolle, Executive Director Weltenergierat – Deutschland, the Council’s German Member Committee, moderates the following discussion including participants from Bundesverband Neue Energiewirtschaft, RWE IT and German Bundestag.

Agah Uğur, Executive Board Member and Group CEO, Borusan will open the second part of Energy Day, entitled ‘Turkey – Energy Hub for Europe?’, ten days before the World Energy Congress opens its gates in Istanbul.

Member committees have already received an information package and embargoed copy of the report at the beginning of September in order to allow for national media outreach campaigns.
