The annual Start Up Energy Transition Award is an international competition for start-ups and young companies worldwide who are working on ideas affecting the global energy transition and climate change. All participants win by joining a global community of likeminded innovators. Winners gain to pitch in Berlin, get featured as a top global start-up with the World Energy Council, win price money, and more.

Start Up Energy Transition is an initiative powered by the German Energy Agency (Deutsche Energie-Agentur, dena) held in cooperation with the World Energy Council as a strategic partner, and by the Government of Canada as a country partner.

THE AWARDS

The Awards are open for young companies and innovation projects around the world to apply across six different categories that reflect the critical issues facing innovation needed for the energy transition globally, as identified by the World Energy Issues Monitor:

No matter how far innovators get into the SET process, they always win! From the possibility of joining energy leaders, partners and investors in Berlin, to celebrating  the winning innovation at the Award Ceremony after the Tech Festival, to connecting with the global platform of innovation leaders and the wider World Energy Council network and community of influencers, every participant will gain something out of this!

THE PROCESS

SET 2018 was launched during COP23 in Bonn on November 14th, 2017 and will close on January 31st, 2018.  The three most promising start-ups in each category will pitch their business ideas at the SET Tech Festival in April 2018, and the Award Ceremony will be held at a reception hosted by the “Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue” with over 100 international delegates. Key insights from the 2018 innovators’ network will also be incorporated into the global energy dialogue through the analysis work and exchange platforms of the World Energy Council.

The quality and variety of the SET Final Jury is a key component for the systematic identification of the best and the brightest innovators from around the world. Our Jury members are carefully selected within the global networks of energy leaders of the World Energy Council, supporting countries, and partners.
