Comité Algérien de l'Energie

The Algeria National Committee aims to promote sustainable energy development in Algeria, as a part of the WEC’s energy vision. As a member of the WEC network, the organisation is committed to representing the Algerian perspective within national, regional and global energy debates. The committee includes a variety of members to ensure that the diverse energy interests of Algeria are appropriately represented. Members of the committee are invited to attend high-level events, participate in energy-focused study groups, contribute to technical research and be a part of the global energy dialogue.

Chair: Noureddine Boutarfa


Mr Noureddine Boutarfa holds a degree in physics from the University of Algiers (Algeria), and an engineering degree majoring in engine application. He joined Sonelgaz in 1974, where he spent the greater part of his career, rising to the positions of Director of Economic studies and Director of Engineering. In 2001, he was named Chairman and CEO of the Algerian Energy Company (AEC), which specialises in development projects, in particular, electricity generation and sea-water desalination. He is currently serving as Chairman and CEO of Sonelgaz Holdings, a subsidiary of the Sonelgaz Group, that are primarily involved in generation, transmission and distribution of electricity and natural gas, building infrastructure for the energy sector, and R&D. In 2004, he chaired the Maghrebian committee for electricity (COMELEC), which includes the electricity companies of the Maghreb countries; he assumed its presidency again as of January 2012. In April 2012, he was elected as the first president of the Association of Mediterranean Transmission System Operators (Med-TSO). Mr Boutarfa chairs the Algerian Energy Committee member of the World Energy Council (WEC). He is also a member of the boards of companies from the telecommunications and energy sectors.
