Focus: Geopolitical Fragmentation: Three Scenarios for the Energy Industry and Climate Protection

The World Energy Council – Germany has organised the presentation of its annual publication "Energy for Germany 2026". During the webinar, they will present this year's focus chapter on "Geopolitical Fragmentation: Three Scenarios for the Energy Industry and Climate Protection".

• Dr. Jacopo Pepe, research associate at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) and author of this year's focus chapter, will present the key findings.

The international order is in a phase of profound geopolitical upheaval. The strategic rivalry between the USA and China, Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East, and the rise of new players in the Global South are permanently changing the framework conditions for energy policy, climate protection, and international cooperation. For the energy sector, this means a fundamental change: security of supply and resilience are becoming increasingly important, while energy, raw materials, and technological value creation are increasingly becoming strategic factors of geopolitical power. Trade relations and supply chains are being reorganized, and critical infrastructures are becoming more of a focus of security policy considerations.

In the current issue of "Energy for Germany", we shed light on the causes and consequences of geopolitical fragmentation and examine the possible effects on energy supply, climate policy, and the economy on the basis of various future scenarios. We also discuss what conclusions can be drawn from this for Germany and Europe.

• Dr. Samira Sultan, Senior Economist at the German Economic Institute, will comment on the results and give an impulse to provide an up-to-date assessment of the scenarios.
