Global Grid Dialogue Series: Transmission Investment and Cost Allocation in Evolving Power Systems

Co-organised by World Energy Council South Africa, Africa Sustainable Energy Centre, and Energuse Mzansi.

On Tuesday, 21 April 2026, from 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

The Grid Expansion Dialogue Series is brought to you by Energise Mzansi in collaboration with World Energy Council South Africa and the Africa Sustainable Energy Centre, setting the stage for a focused exploration of how countries around the world have accelerated transmission development to meet growing energy demands.

This edition shifts the discussion from demand dynamics to the implications for infrastructure investment and delivery. As electricity demand becomes more uneven and increasingly concentrated, transmission systems are under growing pressure to respond faster and more strategically than traditional planning frameworks have allowed.

Join as they explore one of the most pressing questions facing power systems globally:

  • How is transmission infrastructure financed?
  • Who ultimately pays for it?
  • What needs to change to accelerate delivery?

Drawing on global experience and local relevance, the discussion will unpack the trade-offs, risks, and practical considerations shaping transmission investment in a rapidly evolving energy system.

Energy literacy is key to ensuring that people and communities, who remain the critical gap in all transition roadmaps, can be active authors of energy transitions; not just its passive characters. In South Africa, our Member Committee (Energy Council of South Africa)’s "Energise Mzansi” campaign is empowering South Africans to do just that by simplifying the complexities of the country's ambitious energy transition plan and breaking them down into easily understood, bite-sized toolkits. You can register here.
