8 April 2015, Yerevan – The World Energy Council announces that the Armenia Member Committee will join as its newest member country today.

The World Energy Council’s 95th member committee aims to promote and support safe, affordable, and reliable energy transformation in the region.  As part of its work, it will provide a platform for all stakeholders to discuss and work on the future of energy while representing the Armenian perspective within national, regional and global energy debates.

Areg Galstyan, Chair of the World Energy Council’s Armenian member committee and Deputy Minister of Energy commented: “Given the challenges that energy companies face nowadays in respect of the transition to a more mixed fuel supply, lower energy prices, the World Energy Council provides an excellent platform to participate in the regional and global discussion for solutions.”

Armenia ranks 84th among 129 countries in the World Energy Council’s 2014 Energy Trilemma Index and achieves an energy balance score of CCC. The Index measures countries’ energy sustainability performance based on the three pillars of the trilemma: energy security, energy equity, and environmental sustainability.

Dr Christoph Frei, Secretary General of the World Energy Council, says:

“Armenia has upward potential in all trilemma dimensions. Among the main challenges lie imports and dependence in energy, domestic electricity generation, and energy security. In this context, balancing the trilemma will remain a challenge with national and international dimensions. We are delighted to welcome Armenia at the World Energy Council and look forward to working with its energy leaders on critical challenges ahead. “

The Council’s Armenia member committee’s founding member is Electro Power System Operator.

The country is the 95th member committee of the World Energy Council and brings the number of Eurasian member countries to 3.
