Practicing Trilemma Discipline – Regional Leadership Exchanges Highlights

In April–May 2026, the World Energy Council convened a series of Regional Leadership Exchanges bringing together 275+ senior leaders from 65 countries across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas. The exchanges explored how regions are navigating the increasingly complex balance between energy security, equity, and environmental sustainability – in an operating environment defined by geopolitical fragmentation, rising demand, and institutional strain.

A consistent message emerged: this is no longer simply a transition challenge, but a systems leadership challenge. Many of the trade-offs leaders face are no longer primarily technological – they reflect challenges of sequencing, governance, and institutional coordination that differ significantly by region.

The highlights document captures the emerging regional narratives, Trilemma performance, and key leadership challenges shaping energy decision-making across five regions.
