Malaysia: Sarawak Energy joins as direct member

Sarawak Energy, an electricity provider owned by the Government of the Sarawak state, Malaysia, joined the World Energy Council in March.

Sarawak is part of the island of Borneo, the third largest island in the world. This is the third direct member to join the World Energy Council since Singapore Power and the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Energy and Mines  joined earlier this year.

The direct membership with Sarawak Energy constitutes the first step towards the development of a National Member Committee in Malaysia. The Council and Sarawak Energy will work together towards this common goal. The Member Committee will aim to promote sustainable energy development in its country and would be a platform for relevant stakeholders to share and exchange key matters related to the power and energy environment in Malaysia and the region. Sarawak Energy will be attending the World Energy Leaders’ Summit (WELS) which will take place on 17-18 June 2015 in Manila, Philippines.

Organisations in countries where the World Energy Council does not yet have an active member committee may now join the Council under a direct membership. This is a scalable engagement process for individual companies or organisations that provide them with access to the World Energy Council’s network, work programme and events.
