Romania is the first country in Europe to achieve EU Directives by increasing its share of renewables in the generation mix to over 20%, far ahead of the 2020 deadline, but there remain issues to be addressed.
At a recent international conference held in Bucharest, the Romanian Member Committee discussed the technical challenges and possible solutions for continuing integration of renewables in electricity grids. Romania has already reached its targets for the share of renewable energy sources in the electricity mix due to a significant increase of installed photovoltaic power plants, but grid integration of renewable energy resources presents issues.
In the last five years, the Romanian electricity system, due to generous incentives, has experienced a rapid development of renewable energy resources from zero at the beginning of 2010 to 4,176MW at the end of 2013, while electricity production increased from 290GWh in 2010 to 7,753GWh in 2014.

But there remain important economic and technical issues with relation to transmission and distribution that need to be addressed.
“These issues range from losses in the transmission and distribution networks to the need for electricity storage systems, particularly acute if the growth in photovoltaic installations continues.
“Without doubt, smart grids with the latest IT technology and the smart people to run them will have an important role to play in the development and growth of grid-connected renewable energy sources.”
