Dr Christoph Frei, WEC Secretary General, engaged Colombian government and industry on WEC activities during a visit to the country on 31 August and 1 September.

Dr Frei met with Dr Adriana Soto, Colombia’s Deputy Minister of Environment, and presented to her the WEC Energy Sustainability Index, published as a part of the WEC's assessment of country energy and climate policies. The ministry expressed its interest in participating more closely in WEC activities, and was invited to become more engaged in the WEC activities through COCME, the WEC’s Colombian Member Committee.

Dr Frei then held talks with Javier Genaro Gutiérrez Pemberty, President of Ecopetrol, the petroleum company.  He discussed with MR Gutiérrez Pemberty the current status of Colombia and the region’s energy industry, and the latest on conventional and unconventional hydrocarbons.

Dr Frei invited Ecopetrol to participate in various WEC events in 2012 and 2013.  This includes the 2013 World Energy Congress where Mr Gutiérrez Pemberty has accepted the invitation as a speaker.  During the meetings Ecopetrol also confirmed that it will be officially sponsoring the 2014 Executive Assembly in Cartagena, Colombia.

Dr Frei’s visit was made possible through the support of COCME and José Antonio Vargas Lleras, the WEC Vice-chair for Latin America and the Caribbean.
