UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in a meeting with Kim Joong-kyum, the chairman of the Organising Committee for WEC Daegu 2013 and KEPCO President & CEO, that he is looking forward to the upcoming Congress in October 2013.

Mr Ban described energy as the “golden thread” connecting the UN’s Millennium Development Goals during his discussions with Mr Kim on the closing day of the Yeosu EXPO in Korea on August 12. Mr Ban was attending a Model UN simulation program for students at the EXPO.

Mr Kim said: “The Secretary General expressed keen interest in energy and explained that it is crucial for solving the global issues he is concerned about, such as poverty and the rights of women and the protection of children. He described it as the golden thread running through all these issues.”

Mr Kim’s meeting with the UN Secretary General followed the meeting in February when Dr Christoph Frei, WEC Secretary General, extended an invitation to Mr Ban to participate at WEC Daegu 2013.

The WEC is taking part in developing the baseline report for the UN Secretary-General’s Sustainable Energy For All (SE4ALL) initiative. Mr Ban addressed the last Congress in Montreal in 2010 by video link.

Mr Kim reiterated to Mr Ban that the Congress was the premier event for the global energy sector and it can play a key role in underscoring and highlighting SE4ALL.
