The World Energy Council held all standing committee meetings in London between 8 and 9 June and welcomed representatives of the Council’s member committees from across the globe to discuss key topics in the run up to the 23rd World Energy Congress and Executive Assembly week in Istanbul.
The two days of meetings were preceded by a welcome dinner hosted by the board of the Council’s United Kingdom member committee at the historic Royal Society.
The Studies, Programme, and Communications & Strategy committees met on 8 June to review progress on the many reports that are being produced in advance of and for the World Energy Congress. There was active participation from standing committee members and observers from a number of member committees who helped to ensure that the meetings proved successful.
During the Communications and Strategy Committee meeting, members were able to visualise the current progress of the new brand implementation at a global and MC level with over fifty percent of member committees having already selected and received their new logo.
Members also had the chance to hear about the high level of impact the Council is having on the international energy scene through outreach activities, becoming an influential and well respected presence at this year’s Clean Energy Ministerial, attending the APEC Energy Working Group meetings, helping to shape the new United Nations Sustainable Energy for All strategy, as well as advising the European Commission on Market design.
Officers and observers in attendance also heard about the success of the Council’s online magazine World Energy Focus, which currently has a reach of more than 100,000. Plans for a special printed edition are currently in place which will be distributed at Congress.
The Congress Organising Committee provided a full report about the progress of the Congress to members. With the exception of the special World Energy Focus printed publication, the Organising Committee outlines their vision to produce an “almost” paperless Congress.
The Chair of the Organising Committee, Murat Mercan, and his team outlined their plans for the ‘online experience’ for delegates including a demonstration to members on how this will be achieved. Some of the features, he demonstrated included an app for phone/ tablets, a scheduler that will allow participants to be able to decide which sessions they will attend, and print off a personal agenda, as well as allowing delegates and the media access to our reports in the form of an E-book.
A platform that allows for live feedback and questions submitted by the audience to the moderator will create opportunities for more interactive discussions between audience and speakers during the sessions.
Updates from the Studies Committee meeting included a review by Joan MacNaughton, Chair of the World Energy Trilemma, about the work undertaken by the Trilemma Study Group which is currently reviewing the Trilemma Index methodology.
Based on the work done to date, they prepared a document which provided an overview of the process and rationale for developing the new methodology, explanations of the changes and what these mean for various country groups (but not for specific countries), and an appendix explaining the new methodology in more detail. The document was sent to member committees to seek their feedback on the updated methodology, which was then presented at the meeting.
Hans-Wilhelm Schiffer, Chair of the World Energy Resources, gave an update on the significant work of the Resources team including a presentation on emerging key messages for each of the 13 resources’ chapters. From Hydropower, to Gas, including storage, nuclear and marine, the resources work will be presented during the World Energy Congress in October providing a fresh perspective analysis for each of the world’s energy resources.
Ged Davies, Executive Chair, World Energy Scenarios, presented an update on the top line messages emerging from the work of the scenarios team. The new World Energy Scenarios to 2060, to be presented on the opening day of the World Energy Congress, will again use the framing of the well receive Jazz and Symphony narrative, but new for this year will include a third scenario picking up on the emerging themes identified during the many workshops that have been held over the past 18 months.
On behalf of Joern Van Der Veer, Executive Chair, Resilience, Didier Sire, Head of Sectoral Programmes, also outlined the key messages on the Financing the Resilient Energy Infrastructure report which comprises of three main strands: managing the risks of cyber security threats, the energy- water-food nexus and extreme weather. The report is calling for immediate action in order to secure a resilient infrastructure and will be presented ahead of Congress on 12 September.
Programme committee discussions started with an exciting overview of the World Energy Academy programmes which are developing at a very fast rate as well as the Future Energy Leaders’ programme which is gearing up towards the “FEL summit” to take part during the Congress. Didier Sire also gave an update on the Global Gas Centre (GGC) on behalf of René Bautz, Chair of the Global Gas Centre and CEO of Gaznat, commenting that the GGC had a strong European footprint and was in contact with all the main gas companies through the Council’s engagement activity.
Regional updates were presented by each of the Regional Vice Chairs including: news on Mongolia becoming the Council’s newest member committee, the launch of the Spanish member committee’s latest report ‘Energy and Geostrategy 2016’; plans for the Chilean member committee launch event; an update on World Energy Council Chair, Marie-Jose Nadeau’s, keynote address at the Jordan International Summit in May; as well as a progress report on the North American region’s programme of activities and events.
The three day activity concluded with an Officers’ Council meeting.
