The World Energy Council will be bringing the findings of its studies and the deliberations of its 2013 World Energy Congress to the UNFCCC’s climate change negotiations in Warsaw, Poland this month.

Presentation of its studies and programmes will focus on the World Energy Trilemma, World Energy Scenarios, and the Global Electricity Initiative, all of which were discussed at the Congress.

The WEC will kick off a week of activities at its official COP-19 side event on its World Energy Trilemma work on Friday, 15 November (15.00 to 16.00). The event, “The energy trilemma – what is needed to balance energy challenges?”, has been organised as part of the UNFCC’s “BINGO day”, a day of discussions by major organisations within the Business and Industry NGOs group, focusing on the theme, “high growth with low emissions: synergies for global impact”.

The WEC has organised a panel discussion moderated by Joan MacNaughton, Executive Chair of its Trilemma study, with five panellists including Diana McQueen, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development of Alberta, Canada; and Henning Wuester, Senior Manager of the Green Climate Fund; and Juan Alario, Head of the Energy Efficiency and Renewables Division of the European Investment Bank.

The WEC will also be presenting its work and insights at the following events:

World Climate Summit, 17 November. Joan MacNaughton will be moderating a plenary on “national and sub-national collaboration on climate change” (9.45 to 10.45), while WEC Secretary General Christoph Frei will moderate a plenary on “innovative approaches to energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources” (16.30 to 17.30).

Christoph Frei will be providing a global, all-energy perspective to the International Coal and Climate Summit (18 November, 10.00 to 11.30) in a panel discussion, drawing on the Trilemma and Scenarios studies.

Karl Rose, Senior Director of Scenarios and Studies, will be presenting the World Energy Scenarios work at the Caring for Climate Summit, in its session on “energy efficiency, renewables and technology solutions” (19 November, 10.15 to 11.30); and at the Sustainable Innovation Forum, in the session on “energy transition: how can we make low carbon infrastructures more viable?” (20 November, 10.40 to 11.40). The latter event is part of the Climate Action Programme, a global platform run in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Commenting on the WEC’s engagements during COP-19, Stuart Neil, Senior Director of External Affairs and Communication, says: “The work produced by the WEC network and the statement issued by the WEC at our Congress provide a strong grounding for our activities during the forthcoming Conference of the Parties meeting in Warsaw. The UNFCCC’s Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres has recognised the importance of our work and particularly our Energy Trilemma recommendations to the ongoing negotiations process. Our network and the leadership of our national member committees are important – as it is our members who both inform and deliver the energy system we need.”
