Global Gas Centre

As a high-level platform to shape the natural gas agenda, the Global Gas Centre was established at the beginning of 2015 with the support of its founding members: Swissgas, ENGIE, OMV and the World Energy Council, which also acts as host to the organisation.

At a time of critical transition in the energy sector it is increasingly important for leading players in the gas industry to have a neutral and independent arena to exchange views, share best practices and ensure that the role of natural gas in the wider energy system is understood with clearly defined policy and market frameworks.

Through Global Gas Centre events and dedicated sessions at the World Energy Council’s global energy leaders’ events, the Global Gas Centre programme encompasses international perspectives and provides a global platform for its members.

Content alignment with the Council’s strategic studies – including the World Energy Trilemma, Scenarios, Resources, and Issues Monitor – provides strategic insights on the future of natural gas and cross-cutting expertise beyond the sector.

René Bautz is Chair of the Global Gas Centre and Chief Executive Officer of Gaznat SA. He is also the Chairman of Gas&Com and sits on the board of several gas organisations including the Swiss Gas Industry Association, Gaziers Romands, Swiss Energy Trading, Swissgas and Transitgas, as well as participating in the activities of GIE and Eurogas.

Following his studies in electrical engineering and a Master of Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Mr. Bautz dedicated his entire career to the field of energy. Starting out as Head of Studies & Construction at the power company Electricité Neuchâteloise (ENSA), he then joined Câbles Cortaillod (now Nexans) before serving as the Director of the Utility for the town of Bienne (ESB). Mr. Bautz then assumed the role of Managing Director for 5 years at the Société Electrique des Forces de l’Aubonne (SEFA), before joining Gaznat as Chief Technical Officer in 2002. He then served as Chief Operating Officer before becoming CEO in 2008.

“I am personally convinced about the need for gas and energy companies to have a platform of discussions dedicated to themselves and topics of energy, and where the exchange of views and best practices is the operative word. Our objective is to develop a platform focused on gas issues. Indeed, the gas industry is currently facing huge challenges and it is crucial to integrate gas as an important commodity among the energy mix.”
