23 October 2025, Guangzhou, China and London, UK: China Southern Power Grid (CSG) has become a patron of the World Energy Council, joining an exclusive group of leading international corporations and organisations committed to progressing solutions to achieve more and better energy for billions of people and a healthy planet.

The World Energy Council Patron programme provides privileged access to an influential global community spanning industry, government, academia and start-ups for knowledge and information exchange to drive global energy agendas.

Established in 2002, CSG is a critical pillar in China’s national energy security network, with responsibility for investment, construction and operation of the electricity grid in southern China, and additional transmission and interconnection projects within and across regions. Covering five provincial-level regions and around 1 million square km, CSG provides electricity to nearly 300 million people across 5 provinces in China.

As a recognised global leader in ultra-high-voltage and direct current and voltage-source-converter HVDC technologies; a footprint in international cooperation, grid interconnection and energy trade; and one of China’s highest philanthropic donors, CSG has a powerful footprint and will benefit from the Council’s extensive global network of more than 3,000 member organisations across more than 90 countries.

The new Patron Agreement was signed in Guangzhou by Dr Angela Wilkinson, Secretary General and CEO, World Energy Council and Mr Liu Wei, Vice President, China Southern Power Grid.

Dr Angela Wilkinson, Secretary General and CEO, World Energy Council, said: “We are delighted to welcome China Southern Power Grid into the Council’s visionary and practical world energy leadership community. As a key leader in China’s remarkable energy grid infrastructure, CSG’s experience will be essential for ensuring access to more and better energy for a more demanding energy future. There can be no transitions without transmission; and we look forward to a fruitful partnership with CSG as we connect energy learnings and expertise across the world with each other to build a brighter future for all.”

Mr Liu Wei, Vice President, China Southern Power Grid said: “We look forward to sharing our practical experience in green and low carbon energy transformations with the World Energy Council. Together, we can exchange ideas and practices in innovative energy solutions, and share further wisdom and learnings from China Southern Power Grid to further global energy transitions."

The Council is pleased to be collaborating with CSG alongside the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) within the Patron programme – two key players supplying electricity for 1.4 billion people in China and related regions.

Leveraging its influential position and over 100 years of energy leadership, the Council uses its convening power on behalf of its Patrons to bring together whole energy system dialogues at multi-sector, regional and local levels around energy transitions. It equips leaders and their organisations with tools, insights and events – like the upcoming 2026 World Energy Congress – themed Inspiring Transformations Delivering Transitions - to drive innovation and learning

About the World Energy Council

The World Energy Council is the world's oldest independent and impartial energy leadership community. Through our Humanising Energy vision, we involve more people and communities in accelerating clean and inclusive energy transitions in all world regions. Formed in 1923, the Council is a UN-accredited global energy body that has convened diverse interests from across the full energy ecosystem for a century. Today our global network has over 3,000 member organisations and a presence in more than 100 countries, drawn from governments, private and state corporations, academia and civil society, as well as current and future energy leaders.

The Council convenes leadership dialogues including the World Energy Congress to enable new collaborations and drive impact; and provides a range of practical tools including the World Energy Trilemma Framework to define, support and better manage energy transitions.
