Variable renewable energy sources integration in electricity systems 2016 - How to get it right

Renewable Energy Sources (RES) offer many benefits, such as CO2 emissions mitigation, fossil fuels import requirement reduction and new jobs creation, just to name a few. The report ‘Variable renewables integration in electricity systems: how to get it right identifies these challenges and offers solutions based on the experience of industry operators around the world.

Sharing information and experiences between countries, both positive and negative, about different ways to manage certain impacts of variable RES will help ensure each country maximises the benefits and minimises the drawbacks of RES technologies. This has been recognised by the electricity industry and therefore, the World Energy Council established this Knowledge Network (KN).

The conclusions of the study indicate that the complexity and the overall impact of variable renewables integration in national electricity systems are often underestimated both by the consumers and politicians.

The report is prepared with the support of CESI SpA, Italy, and features insights from the 48 members the RES Knowledge Network has, representing 32 different countries from five continents.
